Small Businesses Advertising Problems:

The problem is simple... Most small business are under capitalized and the rising cost of doing business is staggering. So, if you are going to be in business you had better make good solid decisions. Your business cannot afford to many mistakes with it's capital. Payroll will always me a necessary evil. Advertising is a must! However, It must work. The definition of work when it comes to advertising can be stretched.

EXAMPLE: Eat At Joes spent $1400.00 on a full page ad in a small town newspaper for 1 Day. The newspaper was trying to help the businesses in town by running specials like this once or twice a year. The even threw in 1 Color to be used in the Ad. The response from the ad that was trackable for the week was an additional $1532.00 in sales. $255.33 per day based on 6 day work week. 

Was the ad a success? Let's take a look. The average new restaurant when things are going well will Gross Profit about 20%, that's when things are going perfect. So, $255.33 X 20% = $51.06 per day. $51.06 X 6 = $306.40... Some people would say that the ad was a success because it brought in and extra 1532.00 in gross sales but in reality the ad did not generate enough profit to even pay for itself. (Remember Cost Of Goods Sold)  THEIR BUSINESS LOST!

 

This happens every day because business owners overpay for advertising and don't get enough of it. Even more confusing is they will do it over and over again all while complaining. Go Figure? Even I will admit that if advertisers would give you more time and space for your dollar it would be even more successful. I often wonder why they don't. I mean after all the more successful your ad is the more your will return right, NO... your already going back. Remember.
